OKC prostitute found guilty of murdering her 'John'

5/15/2018 - OKC, OK -- A Oklahoma City prostitute has been found guilty of the brutal stabbing death of her customer and sentenced to prison.

As previously reported by JohnTV, back in Aug. of 2015, Sumeika Dolores Byrd stabbed Brendon Jajuan Turner seventeen times. Turner died from his injuries.

Byrd argued that she killed Turner in self-defense.

On April 26, a jury in Oklahoma County rejected Byrd's defense and found her guilty of murder in the first degree. Byrd was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole.

According to court records, Byrd, 29 at the time, went to the home of Turner, 28, for the purpose of prostitution related sexual contact. Turner reportedly lived in the 3600 block of S. Kelly Ave. in Oklahoma City. The home reportedly was owned by Turner's uncle.

Byrd, who is known on the streets as "Bam", allegedly agreed to perform specific sex acts on Turner in exchange for drugs.

After Byrd and Turner finished having sex, Byrd reportedly picked up a knife and began stabbing Turner. Byrd then fled Turner's residence. Byrd says she returned later and slashed Turner's car tires.

Turner's body was found by his mother, who lives in Ponca City.

Turner was the oldest of six siblings and graduated from U.S. Grant High School in 2006.

DNA found at the scene linked Byrd to the crime scene. Detectives didn't question Byrd for 10-months after Turner's murder.

At trial, Byrd admitted to engaging in prostitution with Turner, but claimed she killed Turner in self-defense. Byrd said she and Turner argued over money owed for drugs. Byrd said that during the argument Turner pushed her into a dresser. In response, Byrd said she grabbed her pocket knife and began swinging it back and forth as Turner came at her again.

Byrd claimed that Turner chased her out of the residence and into the driveway.

Prosecutors argued there was no evidence that Turner attacked Byrd and there was no evidence Turner ever chased Byrd outside. According to a police report, a responding officer found Turner lying inside the house with his "insides on the outside." Turner died from fatal stab wounds to his abdomen and heart.

Byrd claims she thought Turner was still alive when she left his home and didn't even know if she stabbed him.

Byrd's DOC record includes 2008 and 2012 convictions for drug dealing and criminal proceeds.

Byrd is currently incarcerated at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in McCloud.
